Nutley resident Victoria Flynn announced Friday she is running for the Board of Education.
Flynn is the parent of three daughters, ages 1, 4 and 6, one currently in Lincoln Elementary School and another starting kindergarten next year. She told the Sun it's important for parents to be involved with their children's education.
"I feel it's time for me to become a member and push for change where change is needed," the attorney said. While she can't be legal counsel to the board, she can bring her knowledge of law to the table, she said, adding she will be "able to ask our professionals questions on public contracts that have in the past cost us.
"It's not a blame campaign; I just want to provide a service."
Flynn said improving standardized test scores, public contracts and district spending are her primary concerns.
A regular meeting attendee, she said she would convey board actions more effectively to parents, which would encourage more parental involvement district-wide. This goal is more obtainable with the electronic capabilities today, she added.
Striving for excellence in the schools through policies can trickle down to the students, Flynn said. "I think our kids can do anything, and I want to be that type of force" that helps guide the district.
"I hope to have a positive impact on the board," she added.
Flynn plans to launch voteforvickyflynn.com and a Facebook page for her campaign.
